History
The project started in 1995 under the leadership of Don & Joyce McCauley and was part of the International
Mission Board until September 2001. The IMB discontinued support for the project, as well as other construction
related missions, as part of their new narrower focus for missions. Feeling God's leading, Don & Joyce resigned
from the IMB to continue chapel construction in Romania. The Project is now a ministry of the Chapel Project, Inc.,
a 501c(3) non-profit organization. Day-to-day operations are directed by Don & Joyce McCauley under the direction
of an independent Board of Directors.

In 2011, Don & Joyce felt God's leading to work in Haiti. After taking several evaluation trips to Haiti and the
Dominican Republic, it was apparent that God was leading the Chapel Project to help build chapels in the
Dominican Republic and Haiti. Given the difficulty of operating in Haiti, the Chapel Project plans to start
working in the Dominican Republic and gradually move into Haiti once experience is gained working in this area.
The need in the Dominican Republic is great given the poverty and many Haitian refugees. In November, 2011, a
six person evaluation team visited congregations in the Dominican Republic.
